UPDATE: Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek on Thursday identified the subcontractor who died after an incident this week at Hercules Cement in Stockertown as Michael Pittman, 33, of Clearville, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. The cause and manner of his death and the circumstances surrounding it are still under investigation and will be released once the probe is complete, Lysek said.
Joseph Lopes, a representative of Buzzi Unicem USA, which trades as Hercules Cement, said the incident happened at 4 p.m. at the site along Route 191. Lopes said the worker suffered an injury and was taken to an area hospital, where he later died. He offered no details about what caused the injury.
Emergency workers provided life-saving aid to the worker at the plant, Lopes said. It’s unclear if the worker was employed by Buzzi Unicem USA or was an outside contractor hired by the company.
The incident remains under investigation by the company, state authorities, and the federal Mine Safety & Health Administration, Lopes added.
A U.S. Department of Labor spokeswoman confirmed a fatality at Hercules Cement happened Monday and remains under investigation. The Mine Safety & Health Administration will post a preliminary report following the investigation, the spokeswoman said.
Northampton County Coroner Zachary Lysek could not immediately be reached for information.
